I got pretty sick this past week. A sinus infection I tried to ignore festered up while I was taking care of my 10 month old who had croup and all *#@% broke loose and I was suddenly being seen for Pneumonia. I’m on some great drugs and finally 3 days into treatment feeling alive and just realizing...
It’s been a solid 4 days since I had caffeine .
Now, we all have our vices and I’d be the first to tell you, I’m an addict when it comes to caffeine. I have two small children, work too much and generally feel like I need the coffee. I started drinking coffee when I quit drinking Mt. Dew and back then (10 years ago?) transitioning a 6-12 can a day habit into a 6-12 cup a day habit seemed... good.
Now though, through the miracle of steroids and other drugs (and generally feeling so crappy the withdrawal symptoms were not apparent) I wonder, should I just quit all together?
I’m somewhat invested in this habit, with an espresso machine, cold brew stuff, aero press, regular drip maker, fancy grinder, friends who roast their own beans etc. Do I just give it all up in an effort to see what life is like clean?!
I tend to think I’ll just try to cut back to 1-4 cups a day.. is that a squandered opportunity? What say oppo? Quit?

1-2 cups a day is a better plan.

I used to work with a coffee machine next to my desk, easy 5-6 cups a day.
I actually went cold turkey after a few days of caffeine withdrawal headaches. Didn’t like the idea of being dependant on anything.
Now I’ll have one good cup on the weekends, and try to limit my week to one or two cups all week, and only in the am.
I just cut out the mindless drinking, switches to water - it’s way better for you.
Ps- croup sucks. Hated that. Happy that our kids have finally out grown it.

I used go from coffee in the morning to energy drinks during the day and more coffee late afternoon. Once the doctor told me my blood pressure was out of control I went to one cup of strong coffee in the morning per day. It took a while but I feel great now and cringe when. I see my coworkers pounding coffee all day.

If you can't detox you should at least try and cut down the amount.

If you are going cut out caffeine, I highly recommend a gradual tapering to avoid headaches.
I wouldn't throw away your investments yet, but maybe just commit to not buying any new stuff.

I massively cut down caffeine a few months ago. Honestly don’t even miss it.

I’m not sure I could ever give it up. I try not to exceed 2 cups a day, but lately I have been.

I switched to those caffinated water flavor enhancers a few years ago to cut waaaaaaaaayyyy back on soda and I never got started on coffee. I still probably get a cup or two of coffee’s worth of caffeine in a day but it’s from a 20oz bottle of water instead of a sugary drink or in concentrated form from coffee/espresso.

Every September ish for the last three years I’ve quit drinking caffeine (internship at an office job where I get in a 7 am at the latest = lots of coffee in the summer). Right before that point each year I would get to about 8 cups a day then realize “hey, I’m gonna give myself a heart attack”. Right now I’m up to 5-6 a day, and it’ll slowly build. I’d give it a try. I’ve found I want caffeine less on days I get up at 6ish and go to the gym. Eating sweet fruit like apples might help wake you up as well.
